Types of Impaction
Impaction can cause serious problems to the surrounding soft tissue and bone. However, impacted teeth are not guaranteed to cause problems. Depending on the likelihood of future complications, Dr. Nussbaum may or may not recommend extraction.
- Soft-Tissue Impaction: A soft tissue impaction happens when the tooth doesn’t fully erupt, leaving your gums partly covering your tooth. Consequently, because it is very difficult to clean, this type of impaction can result in serious problems like tooth decay and infection.
- Partial Bony Impaction: In this case, your tooth will have only partially erupted, leaving part of the crown of your tooth below your jawbone. Like soft-tissue impaction, this can often lead to infection.
- Complete Bony Impaction: A complete bony impaction means that your tooth is still entirely encased in your jawbone.
What to Expect During Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Before your wisdom teeth are removed, Dr. Nussbaum will perform a thorough examination of your wisdom teeth and all surrounding teeth. This exam will include digital x-rays to determine the probability or extent of the problem that your wisdom teeth are creating.
We offer sedation dentistry in Austin, TX. When getting your wisdom teeth removed, you will be anesthetized. Typically, we will use local anesthesia, intravenous (IV) sedation, or general anesthesia. After your surgery, you will be sent home with post-operative instructions. However, you will need someone else to drive you home.
