Wisdom Teeth Removal in Austin, TX

Most people are wiser about wisdom teeth. Often needing to be removed, these teeth have been the catalyst in countless internet videos, oral pain experiences, and anxious trips to the dentist. Wisdom teeth are generally the last four teeth to erupt, making their grand entrance between age 17 and 25.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Extracted?

Because most people don’t have the room in their mouth to accommodate these teeth, these teeth are almost always removed. As a result of the lack of space, you can end up experiencing pain, infection, and impaction. X-rays will help Dr. Nussbaum determine any current or potential damage to the surrounding teeth and oral structures to better understand your risk.

After your examination, Dr. Nussbaum will work with you to determine when and if your wisdom teeth should be removed. Most people are encouraged to remove their wisdom teeth before a problem arises.

Problems That Can Develop as a Result of Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth can cause numerous problems if they erupt improperly or without enough space.

If you are experiencing any pain, call Dr. Nussbaum as soon as possible to schedule your appointment.

Types of Impaction

Impaction can cause serious problems to the surrounding soft tissue and bone. However, impacted teeth are not guaranteed to cause problems. Depending on the likelihood of future complications, Dr. Nussbaum may or may not recommend extraction.

  • Soft-Tissue Impaction: A soft tissue impaction happens when the tooth doesn’t fully erupt, leaving your gums partly covering your tooth. Consequently, because it is very difficult to clean, this type of impaction can result in serious problems like tooth decay and infection.
  • Partial Bony Impaction: In this case, your tooth will have only partially erupted, leaving part of the crown of your tooth below your jawbone. Like soft-tissue impaction, this can often lead to infection.
  • Complete Bony Impaction: A complete bony impaction means that your tooth is still entirely encased in your jawbone.

What to Expect During Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Before your wisdom teeth are removed, Dr. Nussbaum will perform a thorough examination of your wisdom teeth and all surrounding teeth. This exam will include digital x-rays to determine the probability or extent of the problem that your wisdom teeth are creating.
